How I Passed Security Plus With No IT Background

2020.09.23 17:30 Hto215 How I Passed Security Plus With No IT Background

This is really long so I apologize in advance.
For those of you that are about to take the test, reading posts like these is what helped me pass.
I don't have an IT background. I was in the military and my job had nothing to do with IT. I blindly applied to a DoD Help Desk job and the recruiter told me I should get Sec+. After a lot of on and off I decided to go for it. I studied almost exactly 3 months. But looking back could've probably done it in one month. I was laid off 12 weeks and should've studied for it in that time, instead I started studying the day I went back to work full time. Work definitely got in the way of studying. I recently left my job and decided to buckle down and just sign up for the test. I bought a voucher that expires Sept 24 so I would stop dragging my feet and force myself to take the test before that date. Again, I had already been studying on and off for about three months but wanted to nail everything down pat.
Here are my methods:
Read the Kindle version of Darril Gibson's Get Certified Get Ahead (GCGA). This was a great book. For someone that had no clue about computer stuff, he makes it easy to understand. I enjoyed reading it. I didn't think it was dry and the Simpsons references were nice. I scored a 34/75 on exam at the beginning of the book. I wrote down all the Remember This sections of the book and reviewed those and the end of chapter reviews after finishing the book. Highly recommend if you're able to learn from a book. I believed I scored an 84% on the test at the end.
I bought the app to go along with the book. It was $8.49 from the app store for Android. Unfortunately the app crashed every time I used it but I made it work for my study purposes. I let the publisher know. Apparently it had to do with my phone model as they had not heard of that issue before. I have a Motorola G6. Anyway that app was helpful when it did work so I highly recommend.
After finishing the book I pulled up the exam objectives. I know I should've done that first thing. I realized that I didn't know half the objectives. I think it was that I didn't remember everything I read. In fact when I referred back to the book for certain things I honestly didn't even remember reading certain sections. That's why 3 months is too long to study, well at least for me. You start forgetting things. Anyway I listened to Professor Messer's YouTube series while making notes on the objective list. His course was good and for those of you that learn well from video, that's probably your best choice.
I purchased Prof Messer's study notes and practice exams. The first two exams I scored a 77. The third one I waited on and scored an 83. I retook all the exams later on and scored in the low 90s/high 80s.
I also bought Jason Dion's new 65 question practice exams that came out a few weeks ago on Udemy. I realized how much I didn't know or remember from the book. Directory traversal!? Wth is that? I got a 72 and a 68 on the first two exams. This is considered failing because an 80 is required to pass his exams. So I googled directory traversal and Mike Chapple's video series came up.
So I watched Mike Chapple's video series. I liked that he walked you through things like how an XSS and XSRF attack is done. He also demonstrated lots of command line tools. This definitely helped me understand those things is greater detail. Although some of the video topics were very dry. I took like 100 pages of notes while watching the videos. Did I retain everything? Certainly not. I recommend this series if you still need more study after reading GCGA and Prof Messer.
What's weird to me is that not everyone covers every single topic, whether it's the book or the video series I watched. This is why it's important to use multiple resources.
For the hands on portion, I followed the labs from GCGA. Although my Kali Linux VM never worked the way it was supposed to.
I went back to Dion's exam and passed the 3rd one with an 82. Nice! I took the 4th exam and scored a 78 I think.
The day before my exam I studied for about 9hrs. I used a Google doc that someone wrote up here on Reddit. It covers all the exam objectives. To whoever that fine person is, thank you very much.
Link: https://www.reddit.com/CompTIA/comments/hcv3sp/passed_security_2_hours_ago_with_844900/
I took Dion's 5th exam and scored a 78. So I only passed one exam. I was panicking and looked on reddit for answers. Turns out many people score in the mid to high 70s on his exams as still pass the actual exams. In my opinion, Dion's exams were perhaps tougher that the actual exam, probably because they cover stuff beyond the exam objectives. I think I'd still recommend them, there are lots of log questions and I didn't know much about reading logs before doing those exams.
If you really want to have an exam quality test, I'd say Prof Messer's are the way to go.
Total cost of study materials:
The book on Kindle: $10
The app: $8.49
Prof Messer's notes and exams: $40
Dion's exams on Udemy: $12.99
=$71.48
Now for the exam. I signed up to take it online. I read a few posts that people had severe technical difficulties with that and I started to panic. I looked to see if I could schedule in person and I'm not sure if testing centers or closed or just booked solid but there were no open spots for this month or next month. So online it had to be. I was super nervous and didn't sleep well the night before. My time for the exam was 12pm. I reviewed notes for a few hours. I signed on at 11:30 took pictures of my room, which pretty much only had a bunch of house plants and a desk and then a pic of my ID. I sent those in and suddenly the PearsonVue software closed on my computer and a minute later started buffering up the test. It was about around 11:45. The proctor never said a word to me. It was almost like I didn't even actually have a proctor. I took the test over WiFi and had a little stress about that but there were no issues. Overall I was impressed by how smooth everything went, the horror stories I had read made me nervous. Also my computer is 7 years old Windows 10 and it worked fine.
The exam was easier than I expected. I don't know if I just ended up getting an easy exam. Or maybe I over studied. I was worried it was going to be really challenging based on what I read on here. There were some questions that definitely only had one answer and it was obvious what it was. But a handful definitely had multiple potential answers. I know many people say they feel like they are failing the whole time. I felt pretty confident that I was not going to fail as I knew enough of the answers were definitely right. I skipped over the PBQs and answered all the multiple choice first. I had about 25mins left to do the PBQs. Then I reviewed my many flagged questions and changed some answers. I only got through about half of them when time ran out. Which could be for the best because who knows what would've happened if I changed all my answers.
The PBQs were difficult but similar in style to what Prof Messer's were, so definitely understand those. I used every minute of the 90 minutes and had 79 questions total. I scored an 821.
I read so many post on here saying "I passed and so can you" and thought yeah right, I don't know about that. But seriously if you put in the effort to study and take the practice exams and try to really understand the material, you will pass. Big thanks to everyone on this forum, Darril Gibson, Prof Messor, Jason Dion, and Mike Chapple.
Now I'm going to be moving so I just need to find a job. Please, if you have any questions, ask away!

2020.09.22 17:00 SolariaHues Moderating subreddits on mobile

Sept2020
Functionality in the official mobile app is behind that of desktop, it is being worked on, but it’s playing catch-up. This means there are tools and options only available on desktop at the moment.
However, moderating on mobile doesn't have to be so hard; it's easier once you find some tools to help, and a method that works for you.
Our guides so far cover some tips and updates:
For creating a sub in app see Modding on mobile - Milestone 1 update
For sub set-up and design, start here Setting up your first sub on mobile (Adding a banner on mobile)
Here I’ll focus more on moderation and consolidating our mobile moderating tips.
---

Official app status and navigation

Status:
There’s currently different tools on offer for ios and android as the android app is behind in being updated. ios has reached reddit’s milestone 2, and android hasn’t quite caught up (see above linked guides for details), I’ll try and keep the guide(s) updated.
Navigation:
Quick tour of some basic navigation - Where to find the subs you mod, sub navigation, and how to add them to a custom feed and your favourites.
---

Moderation tasks in app

Moderating posts and comments:
Using the modqueue + modding posts outside of modqueue
This imgur guide shows where to find the buttons for spam, removal, approval, report, and lock.
There is no spam, edited, or unmoderated queues in app yet. There are also no removal reasons (see below for workarounds).
There’s no option to lock comments in the app yet. I have let an admin know about this and they’ve added it to their to-do list.
Moderating users:
Checking modmail:
Modmail isn't native yet, in app it opens a webpage. It actually works better if you open your mobile browser yourself to access modmail instead of using the mod tools link. (For me in mod tools the keypad covers the reply box so I'd be typing blind. It's also hit and miss if modmail opens/logs in at all).
Distinguishing:
Guide here (bottom of guide for mobile) - from u/sunzusunzusunzusunzu's Distinguishing comments and posts guide.
Sticky posts and comments:
Guide here - from our All about sticky posts (announcements) and sticky comments guide.
Adding and removing moderators:
Removing mods Adding mods
---

Workarounds or alternatives:

Mobile browser:
Use desktop mode in your mobile browser to access more mod tools if you can't use desktop - it can be a little awkward to log in if you use 2FA (which you should), and a bit fiddly. You can leave reddit logged in, but make sure you have some mobile security in place.
Bookmark or leave open your combined modqueue in your mobile browser if you prefer to check everything at once. And perhaps modmail too.
Some mobile browsers like Firefox and Kiwi allow extensions that help you moderate. I don't know which extensions work on which browsers, so if you have tried this please do let us know!
Browser extensions for mods
Feeds:
You can try a custom feed in app (shown in the guide linked above) for all the subs you mod, but remember it won’t include anything filtered - you still need the modqueue or the other queues for that.
If you have a discord server, try discord feeds - webhooks can be used to notify you of all new posts in your subreddit including any filtered or removed (MEE6 discord bot and others do this). There can be slight delays, and very rarely the bot can go down.
Try a reddit RSS feed (modmail, modqueue etc) and an RSS reader app of your choice to follow your feeds and get notifications.
Bots:
There are a few bots that might you moderate on mobile.
Flair_Helper bot
Flair_Helper can do all sorts of things just based on a flair. That includes any combination of removing, locking, commenting, banning, notifying to a Discord or Slack channel, flairing the author, usernoting the author, etc. Here are some examples of common uses.”
Taskerbot
"A reddit bot to make moderation easier, especially on mobile. Its main goal is to allow mods to remove posts while leaving removal reasons via the bot."
You'll need to host this one, but it works on any platform/app where you can comment.
Do you know of any more?
Automod:
You can set up automoderator to help you too.
Rules can be written to use a command of your choosing to filter, comment, remove etc so you can simply type something like !filter in a comment and the post will be filtered to your modqueue.
Example rules (please share if you have others)
If you are new to modding, remember to keep your automod filters up to date responding to new trends or issues to reduce your workload.
You can have automod rules set up but inactive, ready if you need them, so there's less to do when you're on mobile. For each line of a rule you can have automod ignore it by putting a hash in front of it. Then when you need it, go into automod in your mobile browser and remove the hashes - much easier and quicker than having to write the rule on mobile.
Other apps:
Modding on mobile lists some alternative 3rd party apps.
Bits I've picked up from comments: Apollo or slide use the removal reasons on new reddit. Relay has modqueue.
If you are very familiar with modding on a 3rd party app and would like to write a guide on it, please modmail us. I've started on RiF is fun and relay for android, but if you are a RiF or relay user and would be happy to check it over when I'm done that would be very helpful. Cheers!
A comparison on what is available to mods in each app might be useful too? I'm starting a spreadsheet! What key things do you look for in an app to moderate with?
More mods:
You always have the option of adding another mod who uses desktop. Many subs have mods with specific roles and permissions already, such as CSS mods, Automod mods, etc. needamod Choosing new mods

2020.09.20 21:13 ThroAwyDBR Post Therapist Session 2

Session 1 follow up here: https://www.reddit.com/DeadBedrooms/comments/iu88ib/follow_post_first_appointment_with_therapist/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
In the continuing saga:
Had my 2nd appointment yesterday as the title suggests. She is concerned I am at the point of crossing emotional divorce which scares me as I am afraid she is right and more afraid it may have already happened although I am committed to giving the full effort to repair. We also went over my homework from the 1st appointment which was to create a list of an ideal relationship. We got about halfway through it. I had looked back on my relationship with my wife and picked out the good parts as well as the good parts that were different from a past relationship plus a few things I'd like personally.
Two months ago I content in my marriage, not thrilled due to a few issues, but content. I had started to question a few things regarding the marriage that led to greater and greater doubt in the solidity of it. At the same time I started to for the first time ever consider a separation to give some space. When I decided that I needed to start doing for myself, I joined a gym and the continued desire to live on my own and to be my own person strengthened. I seem to be having a hard time getting out of my own head on this.
I have been fighting against this as it seems to be a dividing issue internally. I have not articulated this to my therapist yet only that I'm concerned I'm too close to the point of no return. Honestly I wasn't quite sure until I started writing the update I think.
The therapist said that we have a tremendous amount of ground to cover to rebuild our relationship and we will both have a lot of work to do. She recommended to start by taking the 5 Languages of Love quiz separately then the 36 Questions to Fall in Love and to combine them into a date night, one without our daughter.
Perhaps through some serendipitous event, that night our daughter decided she wanted to stay at my in-laws overnight. We decided to go out for a quick dinner then to enjoy the nice cool early Fall night, to go on a drive like we used to do a very long time ago. I had suggested we do the 36 Questions in the car while driving. We ended up spending the roughly hour or so not really talking about anything and, I hate to say this, but it was one of the most awkward dates I've been on and it was with my own wife.
She seems to be trying so hard and I have told her several times how thankful I am for her efforts.
When we got home we curled up in bed together and took the 36 question quiz that I had suggested again after she suggested we watch TV. She said she hadn't wanted to do it in the car so the phone screen wouldn't be blinding me as we drove at night, which I greatly appreciated as she is always on her phone in the car and constantly blinding me.
For those who haven't taken this quiz, it is designed to elicit open conversation and emotional connection. We opted to skip a few of the questions as they were definitely more for people who didn't know eachother well. There were some tears shed on some of the questions but though we gave genuine answers they seemed to fail to bring about any conversation. Perhaps I had my hopes up or expected too much. I hadn't thought this would be a magical fix but I had hoped to at least start a discussion on a few of my answers as they were new to our relationship but nothing was said. No furtherance of conversation on topics that changed or would might have given more insight into a new mental state or thought process that was previously unknown to her about me.
I try very hard not to read into things but I can't help but worry this is further evidence of her trying to go through the motions to keep me as opposed to her own self-evaluation to see how she really is rather than who she thinks I want her to be. I bought her the "Come as You Are" book which is commonly recommended on this forum.
After the appointment ended I looked back at the topics on my list we hadn't had time to cover. We had ended up discussing many of them anyway. Having a more active relationship, and by that I mean not just inhabiting the same space and not talking or talking but not communicating. Going on dates, actual dates where we feel connected, not just going to dinner and a movie and not talking or flirting. We have become very passive and complacent in our relationship. We no longer talk about hopes or dreams or ideas or fantasies. The last time I brought up a nonsexual desire the response was "Oh that's sounds cool" then back to her tablet or phone. Again no discussion.
I'm starting to feel like I'm writing a eulogy in weekly installments. It's held at bay by the knowledge I can't afford financially to separate or divorce not do I have the desire at the moment to leave my daughter.
Well, this turned into a much longer post then intended.

A /cscareerquestions College Survival Guide

With our final school year beginning, we were reflecting on how lost and confused we were when we first started university. We made a lot of mistakes (still am) along the way, but we’re in a much better place after learning from them and constantly putting ourselves out there. In hopes of shining some light and helping others, we decided to make a comprehensive guide for university students – based on our knowledge/experiences - on how to start your successful CS Career (or gain the wisdom to avoid CS altogether, more on this later).
rishiss Background: I am a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Software Engineering. I am an incoming Software Engineer at a F100 company (received return offer after interning this summer). Before that, I interned at an R & D center for space, a small cloud company, and a small IT company. I have a 3.65 GPA, won a few awards at startup competitions/hackathons, and remain pretty active in my schools CS organizations.
chaitu65c Background: I’m a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Computer Science. I’m currently a SWE Intern at a Unicorn and just wrapped up my 2nd internship at a Live Streaming Company(you can most likely tell who they are if you browse my history LOL). Before this, I interned at my school’s IT department, did research under a professor, and worked on a few small startups that other UCI students were building. I have a 3.3 GPA, won some awards along rishiss and was pretty active in my school’s CS clubs.
Disclaimer: “But rishiss/ and chaitu65c, you don’t work at a Big N, go to a target CS school, why should I take your advice?” You’re absolutely right; we are, by no means, ‘up there’ like some other folks on this sub. And, you don’t have to take our advice! Simply close this tab and do whatever else you want 😊. Our intent is to guide and prepare uni students for a CS career they enjoy, not work at Big N or get the highest TC. Life is much more than a dick-measuring contest, and the earlier you learn that the better.
We have also created a guide with our own personal advice/stories

Please, take this advice with a grain of salt. we’re not Tony Robinson or Tim Apple, we’re just two random reddit users.

Table of Contents:

This guide is divided into the following sections:

Is CS Right For Me?

The way we see it, there’s 3 types of people pursuing CS.
  1. Those who know CS isn’t for them – They’re in it for the money, to appease their parents, for a minorequirement, some external factor. They hated programming while taking the introductory CS course and just try to get done with their class/degree ASAP.
Advice: The majority of people who fall under this usually burn out quickly, as they aren’t motivated enough to learn the material and to apply themselves. This usually leads to them cheating and getting kicked out of their major, minor, or university altogether. Even if you manage to earn a degree, we've seen a large number of these folks endure a 'pre-mature' mid-life crisis or simply get fired from their jobs. Before you even start this major, you should definitely understand that this isn’t going to be easy, and you do have to put in a lot of effort to succeed. If this isn’t your cup of tea, definitely look into switching into another major you like.
Some folks are really passionate about technology, but don't want to pursue an entire Computer Science major or see themselves as Software Engineers. That's completely ok! Try looking into related majors or minors. We know many students who switched from CS to majors like Informatics, Business Information Management, and Economics and are thriving in tech-related roles like Data Analytics, Product Management, UI/UX Design, and Technical Recruiting. CS is not (and should not be) for everyone, and there is no shame in having the wisdom quit and move on.
  1. Those who don’t know if CS is for them – Where most of the CS community is IMO. These folks (like me, rishiss) are riddled with something called Imposter Syndrome: “the constant feeling of not being good enough or knowing enough to do your job well.”
Advice: For students, really take the time to learn and be open to anything you go through. Try sticking it out until you've taken a Data Structures course, one of the harder, more important courses out there. If you're not understanding the material or just aren't having fun with it, it’s definitely ok to switch majors/careers. Otherwise, CS just might be the career for you! Give it your best shot!
Admittedly, it's hard to provide stronger insight to overcoming Imposter Syndrome, as I am afflicted by it as well. For me, my IS derives from constantly comparing myself to others and confusing inexperience with incompetency. As such, I continue to work and focus on myself and take baby steps towards smaller goals I set out for myself. Knowing that I've put the effort to improve myself by just 1% everyday has made me a lot more confident.
  1. Those who know for a fact CS is for them – The diamonds in the rough. Learning and practicing CS material gives them a euphoric high.
Advice: Broaden your scope and learn new areas of CS! Who knows, you might find another new field that you really want to work in. Other than that, definitely make new friends regardless of whether they’re a CS major or not. Even try pursuing other hobbies like weightlifting, reading, dancing, or even public speaking. Don't limit yourself!

Freshman Year

We recommend not taking more than 3-4 classes in your first quartesemester, as you shouold keep an ample amount of time to go to professional/social events, make new friends and hang out with them, and pursue your interests.
We've seen a lot of freshmen (and upperclassmen) CS folks get cooped up in their dorm rooms playing video games and watching TV. We understand that these two are a passion for many, but please be cautious to not get consumed by them.
You have the privilege of pursuing higher education, making valuable connections/memories, and setting up your CS career in the trajectory you want. This year is the best year to take advantage of all that university has to offer; make the most of it.
One of the best ways to get involved in your school’s/region’s CS community is by joining clubs like ACM and WICS and participating in hackathons (see ‘Hackathon’ section below). Try pursuing internships and positions in these organizations and events as well!
One, major issue we see with freshmen (even upperclassmen) is their ignorance on all the avenues available in the CS Industry. So we’ve tried to narrow it down (not exhaustive).
  1. Cyber Security Engineer
  2. Front-End Web Developer
  3. Backend Web Developer
  4. UI/UX Designer
  5. DevOps/Cloud/Site-Reliability Engineers
  6. Mobile Engineer
  7. QA Engineer
  8. Product Manager
  9. Data Scientist (Machine Learning/AI)
  10. Embedded Software Engineer
  11. Systems Administrator
  12. Database Administrator (The Wizards)
  13. Networking Engineer
  14. Hardware Engineer
  15. OS Developer
  16. Video Game Developer
  17. Solutions Architect/Sales EngineeTechnical Account Manager
As a freshman, definitely take the time and see if you can picture yourself doing any of the listed fields. You should open yourself to all facets of CS and not just the “hot field” like Data Science and Machine Learning. Choosing a field because it’s “exciting” will usually lead to bad results as usually, other people are thinking just like you and will lead to over-saturation.
Our recommendation is to select the top 5 fields that have piqued your interest and experiment with the field. For example, if you are interested in Mobile App Development, try learning how to build an Android app from the ground up. A simple weather app or alarm clock is completely suitable for a first project/prototype. This lets you understand what skills you would need for this field and can serve as a forecast as to what your career would look like.
You should definitely look for an internship. Ignore the people that tell you to wait until you’re a junior, as it’s going to be very hard to get an internship if you don’t have any experience. Common places that most students don’t realize are available are usually IT departments at your school and even research with professors. Researching is highly recommended as you can definitely learn more about a field you can be interested in and if you’re interested in graduate school, that’s going to be a letter of recommendation that you can ask for.
If you’re considered a minority in Computer Science, look into first and second year internship programs as they’re meant to help you succeed. Here’s some programs that come to mind:
Google STEP
Microsoft Explore
Amazon Future Engineer
Uber STARInternhip
Facebook University
Another way to get internships is to research into smaller companies in your area. If the company is very small (<100 employees), consider reaching out to the CEO on LinkedIn. They might be able to help you! Also, take advantage of university recruiting websites like Handshake to see companies that directly hire from your school. More info on how to get an internship in the ‘Searching for an Internship’ section.

Sophomore Year

Now that you have basic programming knowledge, create your own website or GitHub account and start contributing to them with small personal projects. Nobody expects you to make a full-stack MERN project hosted and scaled on AWS at this stage. Focus instead on clean code, learning a framework or two on a language you like, and creating a small, robust feature. Grow from there!
If you weren’t able to find an internship/research opportunity as a freshman, community involvement, projects, and hackathons become especially important, as they are a great way to make you stand out on your resume and to recruiters when you reapply. As you brush up on your skills, apply again, and try your luck out.

Data Structures and Algorithms

In addition, you are most likely to take a Data Structures and Algorithms course this year. Make sure you are focusing on this class and writing good notes; you will need this knowledge when interviewing for internships and full-time jobs in the near future. Here is a link to our DS and A course (in C++) for reference

Junior Year

As a junior, companies are more willing to hire you for an internship, as they are likely to convert you into a full-time employee after graduating. This transition process is much easier than interviewing, and they'll usually offer you a higher compensation package if they want to convert you to a full-time employee. As you now should have knowledge of Data Structures and Algorithms, we highly recommend looking into coding interview prep sites like LeetCode and HackerRank or purchasing a prep book like CTCI or EPI (advanced).
Continue to attend hackathons, remain active in clubs/organizations, and grow your portfolio.
Classes will be much harder; expect the time for completing projects to double and the content covered to be much more difficult. We recommend taking no more than 2-3 upper-division CS courses and balancing your load with 1-2 GE classes. You should not be taking more than 16 units (assuming 4 units per course).
Start to get an idea of what field in CS you would like to pursue. Research what it takes to be successful in that field. You can do so by looking up job postings with that title on LinkedIn and looking at the requested skill set or take a look at Roadmap.sh. If you want to learn more about a related skill set and your school doesn't offer a course, consider picking up a class on udemy.com.

Senior Year

Focus heavily on your senior capstone, project classes, etc. as they're the last thing you can put on your resume before applying for full time. By now, you should have at least 3 polished, working projects on your GitHub that you can easily talk about with your recruiter. Preferably, they're aligned with the CS field you wish to enter.
If you were able to get a return offer from an internship, congrats! However, don’t immediately sign the offer. Once you have an offer, you should still try to interview at companies that you’re interested in by the deadline of the time to accept the offer. A good way of doing this is to reach out to a University recruiter for that company and explain the deadline you have. Usually, they’re really helpful and can potentially help skip interviews that you were supposed to do!
In addition, if your friends were able to intern at places you’re interested in, definitely ask for a referral or to send your resume to their recruiter. This usually reduces the risk of being ghosted by that company and increases your chances of getting hired!
Once you finally sign, definitely take the time to relax and enjoy. Just make sure you pass your classes and stay out of trouble

Classes:

What Classes should I take?

Should Already be Required:

Must Take:

Good to Have

How do I succeed in these classes?

rishiss: You’re more than likely coughing up hundreds, if not thousands, to attend university. It makes no sense to not take full advantage of the course and course staff.
The way I take notes: I learn from examples; I want to enter my code into the IDE to see what happens. I do a three way split; Google Docs on the left, IDE on top right and terminal (to compile, see output, make new file, etc) on bottom left. I note down the date and topic of the lecture and write questions I have in the comments on Docs. I make sure to highlight important information and possible test questions. I even share the link with friends!

In the quarters where I followed the steps above, I never got a grade lower than an A-.

Dealing with Bad Professors

During your time in college, you’re likely going to have at least one bad professor that might make it worse if you have to go to class. If that’s the case, it’s definitely fine to not go to class (as long as it’s not mandatory). However, if you do decide not to go, you must make sure you learn the material, so you won’t be behind on the coursework and studying for tests. In addition, you should be doing something productive on the side. If you don’t go to class and spend the time watching Netflix or playing video games, you’re losing time that you can spend on something that might be fun and can help you in the long run.

You can take Graduate Courses!?

chaitu65c: A highly underutilized set of courses you can take would be graduate courses. Graduate courses are usually very specialized in certain fields. If you were able to take all the undergraduate courses you wanted and still have spare classes to fill out, I'd recommend researching into taking Graduate courses! They’re a good way to build out your specialization and learn new, cool stuff! In addition, if you’re looking for classes to reach the required number of CS courses needed, your CS department might allow you to make the course count towards your degree!

Projects

They're super important.

How do I succeed in class projects?

Personal Projects and your CS Career

rishiss: Projects are your saving grace, especially if you are lacking work experience. They show technical aptitude, willingness to take initiative, and leadership. I’ve seen people with only projects on their resume get positions at the Big N. Projects are good ways to expand your knowledge of CS as the possibilities are endless! It is best to have a variety of projects dealing with a variety of technologies. As such, you can open yourself up to more positions and have more talking points during the interview.
I tend to edit the ‘Project’ Section of my resume with relevant projects and technologies. For instance, if I made a full stack web application and applied to a DevOps organization, I would highlight my AWS, CI/CD, and Terraform experiences more than my React/Node js work.
It is recommend the project is about something that motivates you and are passionate about e.g. video games, movies, books, sports, etc., as it is very easy to give up half way due to stress or lack of motivation/interest.
Like anything else in Computer Science, projects require you to break it down into smaller pieces. Start with the end in mind and draw out the intended architecture/functionalities. Start with what you know and research on the parts you don't know after that. You will be using these skills often in industry for any project/feature planning.
Spending 15-30 minutes a day is all you need to make a successful personal project. Don't make excuses and get coding!

Open Source Contributions

If you’ve ever noticed popular github repositories such as torvalds/linux, these are repositories where people from all over the world can report issues with it and someone can fix it. If you are able to make a contribution to a huge open source repository, it looks really good on your resume.

Hackathons

What are Hackathons?

Hackathons are large scale coding events, where students from around the area come together and collaborate - usually in teams of 4 (but you can go solo or with a partner!) - to build some software. Companies like Amazon, Northrop Grumman, Google, and Twilio sponsor awards related to best use of their technology. After 24 - 48 hours of intensive coding, participants submit their projects, whether it be an Android video game, Chrome Extension, productivity web app, etc. Submissions are shared with the companies and other hackathon organizers, where they select the best projects and award teams with swag like keyboards, gift cards, and even summer internships at their company.
Participating in hackathons are one of the best ways to hone your coding skills, network with companies and other students, and get free comfy T-shirts. It is also one of the best ways to gain industry knowledge, as representatives from these companies and hackathon organizers create numerous workshops and answer any questions you may have. Winning awards at these hackathons are also great resume boosters and talking points during interviews.
The biggest hackathon organizer is Major League Hacking. Visit their website, and you can see all the hackathons (remote or local) they are partnered with. Make to be on the lookout for application release dates from the hackathons and apply early.
With Covid, you may miss out on the free goodies and the in-person networking with students and professionals. However, most hackathons are accepting many more applicants due to it being virtual/remote this year.

What Should I Do At Hacakathons?

Take advantage of the resources available at hackathons. You’re attending a mini CS conference and should be, besides coding, networking with professionals, learning about the different companies, attending workshops, asking technical/non-technical questions to mentors, and getting as much free shit as you can get. Besides T-Shirts, companies give out vouchers to their services, applications to their internship and full-time positions, pillows, notebooks, water bottles, sweaters, and even backpacks.
If you’re looking to get an award, judges at hackathons care a lot about the pitch and the idea rather than the actual execution of the idea. Having an idea beforehand is also helpful, so you can spend your time focusing on the MVP.

Friends and Networking

chaitu65c: I think it’s definitely useful if you have two different friend groups: One dedicated to career and Non-Career Group.
Career Group - When making a friend group dedicated to career, try to be the dumbest person in the group, you’re definitely going to learn a lot from them as you soak up knowledge! Best ways of meeting friends who are career-driven can be through major specific orientation (actually how I met rishiss), courses, major related clubs, etc.
Non-Career Group - While having a group that motivates you for your career is important, it’s also important to have another friend group that can help you relax and to enjoy your time! A really good way to find these friend groups can be anywhere from your hall to General Education courses, social clubs like Circle K, fraternities/ sororities(if that’s your cup of tea) and others!
This is what has worked for us; no need to follow this exact format.

Resume

rishiss: Here are the few take-aways on writing a resume that gets through the ATS.

Searching for Internships

Searching for internships in CS is really different and harder from searching for internships in other professions. CS internship interview processes are often longer and much more technical on what you have learned as a CS major. We've prepped 2-3 months beforehand on CS concepts, whiteboarding, etc.

Timeline

This timeline primarily focuses on large, non-government/defense companies or competitive startups. This also assume you are applying for a summer internship.
August - September: Applications are opened to the public. Make sure to look out for positions and apply early, as most companies admit students on a rolling basis. A site that we used often is Apply.fyi. After applying, you may receive an automated (< 48 hours) invitation to complete an Online Assessment, consisting of multiple choice and/or coding questions about Data Structures, Algorithms, and Run Time Complexity. You will have usually 1-2 weeks to complete the assessment. Please that you may be rejected if you are not able to pass 90% of the questions on the assessment: Please also note that you may be instantly rejected due to things out of your control like years of experience, cancellation of internship, internal corporate issues, and more. Don't take rejections too seriously; just keep applying!
October - November: After passing the resume screen and the OA, you will be contacted by the company's recruiter for a phone screen. During the screen, you will probably be asked a few confirmation questions about your resume, sponsorship, years of experience with X, etc. and minor behavioral questions like what made you apply for this position, what are you pursuing outside of class, etc. You may also receive questions about your CS fundamentals e.g. what is a hashtable, whats the difference between a process and a thread, what is the runtime complexity of sorting a string, etc. As long as you're cool and confident (and not cringe/edgy), this part should be a breeze.
November - Mid January: If you made it through the two Thanos snaps, you will be invited to an onsite “Power-Day,” where interviewees attend 2-4 whiteboard interviews while being grilled on their technical skills and projects. Some companies make applicants go through a panel interview, where a team of 2-5 Software Engineers grill you on technical questions and your resume. You are often pampered with free travel, food, stipends, etc.
December - February: If you were deemed a good fit by the hiring committee, you will be extended an offer to intern at the company during the upcoming summer for 10-12 weeks. Remember, nothing is final until you receive an offer letter in your inbox. Some companies may also place you on a wait-list and offer you a spot if someone were to reject their offer letter.
For government orgs, defense companies, and smaller organizations, the recruiting season starts in February/March and usually ends in April and May. After applying online and passing the resume screen, you will usually be immediately pushed to an on-site interview. Most likely, you will be interviewing with your future boss/co-worker.
Please note that internships are not only offered in the summer, they are provided in the Fall, Winter, and Spring (rare) as well. The competition for these internships is usually lower, and the process usually starts 3-4 months beforehand.

How to get the Interview

Besides following resume tips, make sure to apply to as many places as you can. To get our first internships, we recall applying to approximately 250-300 places before we secured our internship plans for that summer. Also, if you do get ghosted, don’t take it personally, usually, university recruiters often spend so much time reviewing a lot of applications.
Other precautions to take to get noticed are to try attending career fairs if you can, you might be able to get an interview(worst case, free swag!). Other than that, try reaching out to upperclassmen or friends you know that interned and ask for referrals. It’s one of the best ways to get noticed!

What to expect

As part of the interview process, there’s 4 types of interviews that you should make sure you know.
Behavioral Interview: These interviews ask you questions about culture fit such as “Why are you a good candidate” and “Tell me about a time when you ...”
Coding/Technical Interview: These interviews ask you questions similar to what you see on Leetcode and Hackerrank. These interviews are designed to test your Data Structures and Algorithms knowledge.
System Design: System Design involves the interviewer testing your building to design a service/software and test your knowledge of understanding what things to use for the task and how you will integrate them together. You’re definitely not expected to know this and it’s not likely you’re gonna get asked this. Places that could ask you this are Unicorns, Trading Companies and Hedge Funds, and Big Established Companies.
Concurrency/Low Level Interviews: If the company’s biggest product involves low level principles such as networking principles and kernel stuff, there’s a possibility you can get asked this. Places that come to mind are hardware companies and trading firms.
Some companies may adopt only one of these interviews and some may adopt all.

How to Ace the Interview

It’s highly recommended that you look up the interview experiences that other students have faced so that you can potentially filter out companies with red flags and know what questions to expect. Common sources to search up on this would be Reddit (csMajors and cscareerquestions), Jumpstart (Relatively new portal for students), Glassdoor and maybe Blind (Aside from the toxic TC or GTFO culture, they do give good advice on interviews). With that said, here’s some advice we have when you approach each kind of interview we’ve seen.

Advice on Behavioral Interviews

Use the STAR method when describing your experiences. Being quantifiable with the impact of your actions will impress the interviewer.

Advice on Technical Interviews

Begin by reviewing your notes from the Data Structures and Algorithms class. Do not proceed further until you know how to implement these DS and As from scratch with the language of your choice(If you do know python, it’s recommended as there’s a lot of builtin features!). After doing so, we highly recommend a book like CTCI and EPI to gain a review on programming language details and your DS and As. Then, visit sites like LeetCode to practice real questions from major companies. A Facebook Engineer completed 600 LC problems and compiled the most important ones into a list here. During the interview, make sure to talk out loud about possible approaches and tradeoffs before whiteboarding. It is perfectly acceptable (often recommended) to ask the interviewer to ask questions about the problem and get clarification. Once you have an idea in mind and have talked about it with your interviewer, begin whiteboarding. While you talk about the final idea you want to use, write out pseudo code and comments about all the steps you need to implement in order to finish coding your solution. After that, start coding. Make sure to have proper function headers, syntax, spacing, classes/structs, imports, etc. After coding your solution, give a brief explanation and attempt to make it run with less space and in less time (if your solution is not as efficient as you think it can be).

Advice on System Design

These are somewhat hard to approach if you don’t have experience ever doing it. If you do have experience designing and building services in your spare time and as part of your work experience, definitely rely on your experience. An important thing is to definitely ask clarifying questions. There might be hidden requirements you didn’t think about that could drastically change the way you approach the solution.

Advice on Concurrency/Low level

Understand basic principles such as Processes vs Threads (A lot of people don’t know the difference!)TCP vs UDP and how to make an application thread safe. Other than that, it’s recommended that you familiarize yourself with basic OS concepts such as Deadlocks, locks that you can utilize to make an application thread safe, etc.

Searching for Full Time Jobs:

The big bucks.
The process for finding a Full-Time Job is usually very similar to finding an Internship. There’s three main differences are:
  1. Harder Questions. Ex: Google usually asks Leetcode Mediums to Hards + the special Leetcode Hard question that Google asks it’s applicants (they create a new one every year).
  2. More Rounds of Interviewing: For example, Microsoft makes interns do 2 rounds while New Grads do 4 rounds during the onsite part of the process.
  3. Compensation: Interns usually get an hourly rate and, possibly, a housing stipend. New grads, however, are given a yearly salary and, possibly, a sign-on bonus, stocks, and benefits e.g. health insurance, vacation days, etc.
The process for finding a Full-time Job won’t really change as much as finding an internship, but keep in mind that the bar is higher. This is probably the biggest reason why you should look into interning early; by getting an offer at the place you like, you don’t need to go through the daunting process of finding a full-time role.
Get as many offers as you can this time around, so you can negotiate and select the position, company, compensation, and location that works best for you.

Negotiation

Negotiation is a really powerful tool that you can use in the interview process, even as an intern. There’s a lot of guides to negotiation and we recommend Nick Singh’s guide (Look at his LinkedIn and newsletters) for more.

Final Thoughts

University is a probably the most important time of your life and a foundational block of your CS Career. Like any foundation, it must be sturdy and takes a tremendous amount and energy of time to develop. Take advantage of all the resources (like this one) you can get your hands on. Definitely learn from the mistakes people have made and make sure you don’t repeat the same mistakes.

2020.09.13 09:22 throwRAnost89 My (26f) boyfriend (24m) has been distant since my ex (26m) sent him our old sex tapes and a dick pic

Happy Update: https://www.reddit.com/relationship_advice/comments/iwc1zg/update_my_26f_boyfriend_24m_has_been_distance/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Background:
I was with my ex since high school and we were together for 7 years from 16-23. He was this big "alpha male" jock who always had to prove he was the manliest. He was especially proud of his dick which was a little over 8 inches long (he made me measure it). Great, right? Nope. His idea of good sex was jackhammering me for 10 minutes till he climaxed. Never went down on me. Never finished me off. Not once. I had to do it myself. The worst part? IT HURT. He wouldn't use lube and I was rarely wet enough so girls out there can imagine what kind of pain I was in. When he was extra rough, which was most of the time, he would take pride and see the fact that I can't walk properly the next day as a sign of a job well done.
But wait... There's more. We were also in an "open" relationship where it was only open on his end. Why did I agree to it? I was young and stupid. He'd have sex with multiple women and take pictures to show me. As you can guess, it was a very very abusive relationship. The icing on the cake was when I found out he sends our videos to his group chat for some sort of tribute thing I don't understand. I only found out when his 2 newer friends told me when they saw I was crying in one of the videos. They helped me get out and move a few states away. I still keep in contact with those two via email every now and then and I'll be eternally grateful to those two.
The issue:
After almost 2 years of therapy dealing with the aftermath of the abusive relationship, I was finally over my ex and decided to date again. I was working as a waitress one night and found a guy who was apparently stood up by his blind date. Don't know why, he was cute! He talked to me during my breaks and waited for my shift to end. We ended up having burgers after and we've been together ever since.
My boyfriend is the opposite of my ex. Typical introvert like me. He's also significantly smaller than my ex (probably less than 6 inches) BUT is infinitely better. My boyfriend can actually make me orgasm and for the first time, I actually enjoy having sex and it doesn't cause me pain and oral actually goes both ways. He's so, so much better than my ex at sex. He knows about my abusive ex btw. We had a long discussion about it when we talked about each other's past and he actually cried for me.
We've been together for over a year now and after my lease expired 2 months ago, I moved in with him. It's been great so far and the move has only made us closer. We've been so happy up until about a week ago when he started acting distant. We're usually very affectionate towards one another but every time I initiated something, sexual or otherwise, he would turn me down. Every time I asked him what was wrong he would just say it wasn't me, it was him. He's been really sad lately so yesterday I decided to actually confront him and he spilled the beans.
Apparently, my ex found out about him and got his Facebook profile. My ex, being the douchebag that he is, sent my boyfriend a couple of our videos and a picture of his junk and said "I'm pretty sure what you have can't satisfy her like this one can".
My boyfriend said he felt insecure and emasculated. Like he wasn't enough and how much better my ex was. How small he felt after seeing my ex. He said it didn't help that my ex was bigger and more muscular than he was. He said that it was his problem that he was insecure and he needed to figure it out on his own. I tried telling him how much better he was than my ex (which is definitely not a lie) but he wouldn't listen to me. He's sleeping on the couch right now.
Now I don't know what I can do. I don't want to lose a good thing cause of my stupid ex. And yes, before you suggest it I already plan on contacting a lawyer. That's not the main issue here.
Why won't my boyfriend listen to me? Why won't he understand that I'm with him for a reason? Why doesn't he believe me when I say that he's better than my ex? Why doesn't he listen to me when I say size doesn't matter? What can I do to fix this? I miss cuddling with my lovable nerd. I can actually see us getting married in the future so I definitely want to fix this.
Any advice please?

2020.09.13 00:48 thewallamby Why i cancelled my Polestar order.

I think it is fair that people are properly warned what they are getting themselves into, rather than watching the shiny and polish Polestar website that promises thousands of features that most are not true or bumping to fans that are blinded by their decision. So here it is.
June 2020.We own two cars. A BMW 330e 2017 and a Ford Focus 2013 SW. We decided that the Focus had to go and be replaced by a Peugeot e-208. My plan was to keep the BMW until 2022 and get the Skoda Enyaq Hatchback because we have kids and the 208 is not good enough for long drives. So i place a pre-order on the Skoda. (bear with me - it is relevant)
July 2020And so we did. Ford went on sale, 208 was ordered, we went on vacation and during that time i get a mail from Polestar ( i had them on newsletter ) that the deliveries are starting and I should look into it. So i did. They promised all the things that the Enyaq had and some more as i am an avid supporter of the Android platform and the geek in me finds joy with those gadgets. Also according to them i could get the car in 2020 so i was stoked. Fancy presentation, Volvo-volvo-volvo as a flag and features that were only attractive, also a kick as exterior design. Far better than any EV in the market right now. I bite my finger hard and order the Polestar. Delivery time : September.
August 2020At the time i had ordered a Polestar 2 without Performance and 19'' on winter and summer and trailer hook, mats, extra cable and a winter sock as we drive over the mountains in NovembeDecember. We went on vacation and during that time it came in my mind the crazy idea to change the summer wheels to 20''. At the website there is a very-very clear disclaimer : Can i do changes on my order? A: Yes up to 15 days before delivery. But it says no-place-at-all that if you do you get bumped at the end of the line my friends. Nowhere. At least not in the Norwegian site. I contact customer support and ask them politely to change my summer wheels from 19 to 20. Pretty straight forward right? ( i did the same for the Peugeot a week before so i though, come on how hard can it be ) and i get the answer : You need to cancel you order and place a new one. I explain that i do not want to do that as i will get bumped at the end of the line, and i get a dry answer: it is what it is, we do not decide this. I suggest delivering the car with winter tyres and she says no again and that even if i got the car in the middle of winter i would still get it with summer tyres if i did not order winter ones so it is up to me to fix it. They deliver only with summer tyres - summer or winter. I find her attitude extremely square and rude and not-customer service at all...Now at that point i do not initiate the change but i get a mail saying that i have cancelled. I say what the heck.... place a new order with the new spec (and new delivery date December now) and send a public complaint on Twitter to which they respond in seconds that he will look into and please send us a mail instead of posting here... 2 weeks later and a lot of mails from and back with the utterly incompetent manager of customer support at Polestar, the wheels get changed and the order moves back from December to October. I say, ok, its better than December so i shut my mouth and wait.... Now at this point it is worthy to notice that my app still says December 2020 and when i asked they said it is a ''glitch''..... i am not holding my breath though. The e-208 arrives, the car is amazing, everything is as promised, the app works perfectly fine, all the features are activated and we truly enjoy the car.A week after i go downtown for a test-drive on the Polestar. They hastily throw me in and tell me to be back in 20 minutes. The only thing i managed to get in those extremely rushed 20 minutes is that the features in this car are somewhat 10-years-ago, if you know what i mean.
  1. No head up display at a time that others are moving to augmented reality for example.
  2. The sound system was weaker than the 208. Yeah i am serious because i had a 2000USD HK in my BMW and whatever it is in the Polestar it is not a HK ..... not the same price class or quality either.
  3. The seats felt ok but the material was all wrinkled at the edges on a brand new car...
  4. The glass-roof while cool looking is very susceptible to cracks on Norwegian roars when in the winter the stones hail over every car on the streets... A bad design decision on the Model 3 and now copied on the P2 just for trying to get into Teslas eye i bet...
I don't know if you get what i mean but at that point i felt that i was buying a cool looking car that sold for a premium for it's trendiness and not for the actual product. (looking also your way Model 3...) But i said i dont give a shit cause i like how bad-ass it looks externally and love the infotainment and app features so i ll go for it.
I agree with my work that i can work from home the days that my wife works in the office so we only need 1 car for the moment and since the Polestar 2 is coming in October i put the BMW on sale. It sells like fresh butter a week after and i am left with 1/2 a car and the promise that the Polestar will come in 6-7 weeks. It is fine. For now.
Then I join the Polestar-forum and figure out.
  1. OTA does not work. (will not work before 2021)
  2. Phone key access does not work. (will not work before 2021)
  3. Android app does not work. (will not work before 2021)
  4. Headlamps are wrongly adjusted on what it seems more than half of delivered cars (will not work without a shop-visit)
  5. Some cars report that the alarm goes off in random moment and the only way to stop it is to leave the car unlocked.
  6. The fan goes off randomly even when the car is locked.
  7. The charger limits work on some cars and not on others. (will it be fixed with OTA? 2021?)
  8. There is no option to heat the car unless getting physically into it. (will not work before 2021)
  9. The 4G drops in areas where cellphones have 100% coverage. (will it be fixed with OTA? 2021?)
  10. The apps close or won't even start randomly, the selection is limited to 3-4 working apps. (will it be fixed with OTA? 2021?)
  11. The car does not really charge at 150KW even at 250 Ionity chargers. (will it be fixed with OTA? 2021?)
  12. It is not possible to get a warning when the car is at a public charger that charges half a dollar after the charging is done and you are eating a burger. (will not work before 2021)
September 2020In the course of the past 2 weeks I find that Polestar has a terrible record on informing their customers and it smells like Tesla again. Then i contact them and ask them how about those OTA updates and App in which they respond ''Later this year'' only to read their last letter (see under) not a week after that says ''Not before next year''.At this point i am exactly at 1:1, 100% identical history i experienced when i bought my Tesla. And i said no. Not again. So i cancel.
I hope all of you will enjoy your cars, i truly do, and i hope through some kind of luck or miracle you all have great experiences. At the end of the day its just a car but for me it is a little more than that as i literally had to go through hell with Tesla and i do not want to do it again.
The aftermath?
Ford sold to buy the 208Peugeot 208 bought - super happy with it.
Skoda pre-ordered
Polestar ordered with the promise of 2020 delivery with all bells and whistles
BMW sold on that promise and
Skoda cancelled on that promise also.
Now i found all of Polestars shenanigans i have no BMW, i have no Skoda pre-order and Polestar is cancelled.I am not happy with Polestar one bit at all but i am happy that i joined the forum and dodged a huge bullet.
Thanks all, have a nice winter and good luck with whatever car you end up with.

Edit:
No OTA or app before next year.
Polestar has explicitly confirmed the following letter to all current Polestar owners (NOT the ones that have ordered- JUST the current owners):
Dear,
Thank you for supporting Polestar in this exciting start-up phase of our brand.
Some customers have asked for more information on feature updates. We’re sorry for our lack of clear communication on this topic. New technology presents new opportunities, and should enhance the user experience. If it doesn’t, it isn’t ready yet.
A few of our promised features are delayed: Digital Key, Over-The-Air update compatibility, in-car scheduling of preconditioning and the vehicle remote functions in the Polestar app. These need further development before they are entirely ready for you. Right now, we expect feature updates to be made available from the end of this year. As soon as these features are available, we will contact you with the details you need for your Polestar 2 to receive the relevant upgrade, which will happen at a Polestar authorised service point.
Many of you have shared your joy of driving the first Polestar 2 models in the world and we’re so happy you’re enjoying your driving experience. We recognise that some of the very first cars we’ve delivered are experiencing teething problems and it’s our top priority to address these matters and provide solutions as quickly as possible. Should you experience any difficulties or simply have questions, please reach out to Polestar support for guidance.
We want you to know that you count. We hear you and we want to improve through your experiences and feedback. Your satisfaction is our top priority.

2020.09.12 13:02 RazerBones if i have to be honest

I
Never wanted to call out your friends
But I
Seem to do that every day
How do I change your mind
So that you can stay with me
But I can't change your mind
And your identity
But I
Don't want us to just fade away
.
I
Was never really a phobic
But I
Really don't wanna let you go
But girl I need some time
You can't do this to me
Dilemma of another kind
Can't understand the gravity
But I
Never thought she would be my enemy
.
Girls can't make up their minds
Don't play me like this tonight
And I never thought that baby
You would trap me in this way
But don't leave me behind
The rainbow's left me blind
.
I
Never want to see you again
But I
Can't handle the immense pain
Girl when I see you walk with her
It looks like it's all wrong
But the smile on your face
Makes it looks like she was right for you all along
But you
Left me standing in the pouring rain
.
You had to follow your heart
Out of your closet, leaving me in the dark
I never knew till it was too late
That your love for me had an expiry date
How much more can you take?
From every heart you break
.
I just want an explanation
But I'll never find out why
I know it's not a condemnation
Letting your flag soar so high
.
Girls can't make up their minds
You left me broke tonight
I never thought that you would do this
Trapping me in a bottomless abyss
If you have to follow the pride
I guess I have to say goodbye

2020.09.10 20:59 girl_from_the_crypt Tales From a Small Town: Where I've seen the fleshy things before

When you live in Raw and you like someone, you can be sure that the rest of the townsfolk will find out in no time. We are the most gossipy people in existence–everybody knows everybody and a secret you might tell a close friend is sure to be passed on to an even closer friend of theirs.
I'm looking at you, Mabel.
When I was eighteen, I had the biggest crush a young girl could have. The object of my affections was Bo Davis. He was twenty years old at the time and worked as a farmhand on Mr Johnson's property which was located right next to the Lewises' house. As such, Bo of course knew and to my dismay was great friends with Rory and Matilda Lewis. This was obviously a cause for concern. I was worried that they'd badmouthed me in his presence, or worse, that Matilda was interested in him.
My main concern was for any knowledge of this crush to reach them before I'd have the chance to properly talk to Bo myself. No matter how, I just knew they would try to ruin things for me.
One night, my friend Mabel, she's the daughter of Camille and Matthew Freedman who run the only art supply shop in town, had come to visit the orchard to see me. We had been planning on going out but I was a bit down so we ended up sitting down on the swings in our garden to talk. She asked me what was troubling me and I confessed it all to her–my feelings for Bo just as well as my worries about him being friends with "the enemy". I told her to keep her mouth shut about it and she promised she wouldn't tell anyone.
The next day, everybody knew.
I had to learn it the hard way when Vasily and I went to spend the afternoon at Dante's after he had finished running errands for Donovan. This was back when I was still very new to the place and not even close to frequenting it the way I do nowadays, making the whole thing even more embarrassing to me.
"So… Bo Davis, huh?" my brother asked casually, waving to Desiree who was on her bartending shift at the time.
I took a deep breath. "How?" I asked sharply.
"Oh. Wasn't supposed to get out then?"
"Of course not. Who the hell told you?"
"I heard it from Dallas Jones when I got Dad's whiskey earlier, he knows from Kathy Johnson and she heard it from your friend Mabel." He grinned awkwardly. "Sorry. I'm betting you told Mabel," he added.
"She's getting it for this," I growled.
"Hey, don't be upset now," Vasily tried to comfort me. "A four people chain ain't too bad. Could be more."
"That's not helping."
He shrugged, giving me another apologetic smile before glancing over at the entrance and quickly turning away again. "Well, then I bet you don't wanna know who just walked through the door."
I spun around and there he was. Bo Davis was standing in the doorway, in all of his tall, tan glory. He looked around and upon spotting me took his hat off and walked up to me. I could tell he was grinning, but I couldn't place the look on his face. I cursed inwardly. He knew. I was sure he knew. Of course, Kathy Johnson had probably told him at work.
"The two Bennetts," he greeted us. "Good to see you," he told my brother. "It's been a while."
"Sure has," Vasily replied, looking unsure.
"I'll be frank, I was looking for your sister. Would you give us a moment?"
"Sure will," Vasily replied, still looking unsure but willingly getting up from his chair and walking off to the men's room.
Oh fuck. I had a feeling this wouldn't be pleasant. I shrunk into my seat, looking up at the young man in front of me.
"So, I heard something from Kathy, and I don't know if it's true, but…"
"It probably is, go on." Screw you, Kathy.
He smiled. "For real? That's… very nice. Do you wanna go dancing or something sometime then?"
"What?" I must have looked flabbergasted.
"Oh. Okay, this is awkward. See, Kathy told me you liked me and not gonna lie, I was pretty happy about that. I thought I'd ask if you wanted to go out, but if that was just some dumb gossip, I'm really sorry. Didn't mean to be all weird on you."
"No, no, it is true!" I stammered, still absolutely aghast but very much trying to pull myself together. "I just kinda didn't expect you to… uh… I mean I'd love to go out."
He beamed at me.
We started off slowly. Our first date was at the college bar in town where all the younger people go to dance. I had an amazing time and Bo was the sweetest guy ever. A great dancer too. Afterwards, he walked me home and stayed a few minutes to introduce himself to Donovan. They had known of each other prior to that night of course, but Bo took it as common decency to say hello and Donovan loved it.
"He's a good boy," I later overheard him tell Siobhan. "He's gonna have to stop hanging around the Lewises so much, but he knows what to say, I'll give him that."
"And he seems to be such a hard worker," my mother answered eagerly. "I was scared she'd bring home some deadbeat. I love Pepper but you never know with that girl."
I was happy. I was in love. Not just that, I saw myself having a future with him. I knew he did too.
From then on, he would pick me up regularly until we'd spend almost every single day together. He wasn't pushy and the first time we kissed was amazing. Sure, we were both shy and clumsy as hell, but we didn't care. It was still the greatest feeling ever. This went on for one and a half months. And then it happened.
Raw's mayor throws a party for all of us every year on his wife's birthday. It's this huge, grand festivity that everyone attends whether they want to or not. There's music blasted through speakers in the townsquare which is probably loud enough for them to hear it over in Pure and there's fireworks and free booze and cake. It's wonderful, actually. At that point, I had only attended it once before and I had absolutely loved it, so of course I was looking forward to going there with Bo that year too.
Little did I know that after that night, I would spend the following birthdays of the mayor's wife locked inside my room, hugging my blanket and crying into my pillow while trying to keep myself from thinking of that young man I had so adored.
I still remember standing side by side with him, watching as the first colorful sparks rose and exploded into the night sky when he leaned in and spoke into my ear. I couldn't understand him so I motioned for him to repeat himself. He shook his head, took me by the hand and led me off from the small crowd. We actually had to walk for a few minutes until the music had grown quiet enough for us to talk. With all the lights and noise having faded into the background, I almost felt relieved when I could hear his soft, warm voice again.
"I've been wanting to tell you something. I don't want you to feel pressured so make of this what you will for now. So… I used to live with my parents until now but I talked to Mr Adams… he's the guy who used to live in that small, older house just up the street from yours. I've been wanting to move out for a while now and I've finally got enough money to actually think about it. Anyways…" He cleared his throat. "As I said, I talked to Adams and he's letting me have the house for a sum I can actually afford. Like, I will have to pay it off, don't get me wrong, but it's mine already. I'm moving in next week. Just gotta pack up my things."
"That's awesome," I began, my cheeks warming up. "You'll be so much closer!"
"Actually, about that. It really is pretty close. I know we haven't been a thing for long but I… I really want to have you with me. If that's too fast for you, it's okay. But just so you know… if you'd wanna come live with me, I'd love that." He smiled gently. "Of course, I was just super eager to move out already and you haven't even been with your family for too long, so I understand if you don't want to. Just letting you know. This is my invitation, basically."
I was staring at him with wide eyes. That was a huge step. I had only lived in a set place for one year though, so moving wouldn't make much of a difference. I could always return home if something went wrong. I was lovestruck; I wanted this. I was about to tell him when he shook his head.
"Okay, you look… affirmative," he said, chuckling a bit. "But please don't say yes just yet. I want you to really think about this before you decide. You gotta be sure, you know?"
I shut my mouth again, nodded and smiled. "Wanna go back to the party then?" I suggested.
He grinned. "Sure."
Just as this word had left his mouth, a high-pitched, ghastly scream cut through the night air, causing me to gasp and stumble against Bo who quickly steadied me on my feet. He too looked shaken.
"What was that?" I uttered, looking around frantically. We weren't close enough to the mountains for the creatures to be a threat; we were somewhere close to or behind the Johnsons' farm. There was no one else around but there were no dogs barking either. None of the telltale signs were there.
Bo's brow trembled as he stood up on his tiptoes to get a better look at our surroundings. "Way too dark to see anything," he muttered. "Crap."
"You think we should tell the others?"
"No… we gotta check this out first. Could just be some animal. Foxes in heat can sound scary as hell too and I've seen one or two sneak around the farm before."
"Don't leave me alone here," I pleaded.
"Of course not." He offered me his arm. "Not letting you walk around in the darkness on your own."
Pressing to his side, I followed him closer to the fenced area in front of the Johnson farm. It's not the biggest part of their land, simply the one where they grow their vegetables. I could barely make out anything, except for the short moments during which the sky would be illuminated by the bright colorful light of the fireworks.
"Maybe we should get one of our dogs," I thought aloud.
"I don't think we need to. That'd be such a huge detour."
"Do you have some kind of weapon with you at least? Your knife maybe?"
"Hey. Look at me." He kissed me on the forehead. "We'll just check this out. Nothing will happen. Not that I'd let you get hurt anyways." He winked. "No, for real. Everything's okay. It'll only be a minute."
He took a step ahead into the darkness. Another scream pierced the silence and we instantly started into the direction it had come from. We were still close to the Johnsons' farm, now walking around the fenced area and finally coming to a halt in the back of their house. It wasn't all that quiet anymore though. We could hear a low, rattling sound which seemed to come and fade again in long intervals. It took me a while to place it.
It was breathing. Someone or something was slowly breathing in and out, loudly too; yet they seemed to have trouble even doing so at all. It sounded almost like they were coughing with the way the air seemed to labor its way in and out of their lungs. It was raspy, heavy and deep. I had never heard anything like it before. The noises sent a chill down my spine as I tried to make out their source.
"Something's moving over there," Bo whispered.
I followed his pointing finger. He was right. There was something writhing on the ground. I could see slivers of some lighter color moving around in the darkness. "Is it an animal?" I breathed.
"No… that'd be way smaller," he replied in a hushed tone. "We need to be careful, there's this muddy spot over there. The Johnsons' pet pig always splashes around in it. We might slip if we get too close."
"You sure it's not just the pig then? That really did sound a little like a pig grunting just now."
"It should be inside around now. You're right though, it might have run off somehow." He let out a sigh of relief. "I'll check. You stay here, I don't want you to slip in the dirt."
I only reluctantly let go of his arm but stayed in place as he had asked. I watched the sheen of his brown leather jacket being swallowed by the blackness bit by bit.
"Rossa!" he called out, presumably the animal's name, making a clicking noise with his tongue to get its attention. My heartbeat quickened when I heard his breath hitch.
"What's wrong?" I whisper-shouted, a strange, nervous tingling sensation in my hands and cheeks.
"This can't–" Bo's voice was breathless and stunned. It was cut off by an ear-piercing scream, his scream, and I lunged forward, slipping on the wet ground and falling flat into the dirt. My head made contact with something hard, a stone maybe, and I shrieked with pain. I yelled his name, but only received more cries of terror in response. I struggled to get up, not managing to catch my footing in the mud.
"Where are you?" I screamed, now close to tears. I had lost all sense of orientation; his screams seemed to come from all around me. There was no light anymore, my head was spinning as I desperately spun around again and again hoping to spot his shiny jacket or the pale spot on the ground. "Where are you?!" I cried out once more, louder this time, a feeling in my chest like my heart was about to burst.
From somewhere, I thought I could hear him shout at me to stay back, but his words faded into a sickening gurgle before more agonized howls followed. There was a ringing in my ears. I called his name, pulling on my own hair and sobbing in wild despair as the screams faded into silence, until suddenly, all the lights of the farmhouse came on at once. It was so bright I couldn't see anything at first. Blinded, I stumbled around, trying to find something to hold onto.
"Good God…" The deep voice of an older man caught my attention, I recognized it to belong to Mr Johnson. The next thing I heard were three shots and a strange, crooked whimper.
"Bo?" I asked once more into the blinding light. However it was Mr Johnson who responded.
"Mother Mary… Pepper Bennett, right? Stay where you are!" He was speaking loudly but he sounded so afraid. He seemed like he was trying his best to stay calm though, talking to me in a forced soft but firm voice. "Don't move, okay?"
I blinked. I was finally beginning to regain my vision.
"Do not turn around!" the old farmer repeated. "I'm here. It's alright. Just don't turn around."
But I did. I heard him approach me from somewhere behind my back and I turned my head just a little bit. I caught a glimpse of something indescribable. It wasn't like anything I'd ever seen before. It was lying on its stomach, pale and hairless and twisted and alien. I couldn't tell if it was a man or a beast at first. But I saw much more than that. I saw blood.
A large, warm hand wrapped itself over my eyes. "Don't look," Mr Johnson uttered from right behind me, gently ushering me away. It was too late though. I couldn't scream anymore. My throat felt like it was burning. All I could do was sob silently as the farmer led me off and brought me back to Donovan and Siobhan who were both extremely confused but immediately took me into their arms.
Mr Johnson had seen Bo and me leave the party. When we hadn't come back right away, he'd worried we might have been getting up to some kind of mischief. He followed us and was instantly alerted by our screams, so he ran into the house to turn on the floodlights and grab his gun. By the time he returned however, it was too late for Bo. The creature had already torn him apart when he came out to kill it.
My parents brought me to the doctor that same night since I was dizzy and the ringing in my ears wouldn't stop. He said for the most part, it was probably the shock but that it appeared I had also sustained a light concussion from hitting my head.
The Davises didn't put any blame on me. I however did. To this day, I'm not sure if I could have saved him, but I know I could have tried harder than I did. If I hadn't slipped, if I hadn't panicked… maybe I could have helped. I'm not "over" what happened to him. I just don't think of it as much anymore. I stopped spending hours just imagining where we would be today if he hadn’t died. I stopped sleeping for days on end because getting up felt pointless. I guess I stopped to tell myself it was my fault too. All of that stopped a long time ago. Deep down however, I know that a part of me died with him that day.
Every year on the day of his death, I spend around three hours in the local cemetery to visit him. I always go there before the mayor's wife's birthday party starts so I don't have to hear any of the commotion. When I was still eighteen, I would spend almost every waking hour by his grave. It was hard to limit it to just once a year, but I'm glad I did. I knew I had to move on with my life eventually. As I said, it stopped a long time ago. I try to remember him instead of his untimely death. I try to remember his smile instead of the closed casket funeral. And when I leave again, I try to forget it all for a little while.
Where the creature came from, no one knew. It wasn't like the others though. However it closely resembled the one we found in the abandoned house Rocco claimed was haunted.
I'm sorry if this all reads as a bit jumbled. I still get very emotional thinking about it and I've never written it all out before. I don't think I want to ever again.
Since this is my last chance, I guess I should take it to say that Bo Davis was a wonderful young man. I admired him, and no matter if we'd ended up living together or not, I know for sure I would have never stopped cherishing the memories I made with him. I still do.

2020.09.08 00:53 beatadhd I went through 700 reddit comments and collected 131 ADHD pro-tips!

So there was that awesome Reddit thread with a bunch of ADHD'ers sharing real tips that have changed their life.
I thought it was a great change from most advice on the internet which is written by non-ADHD'ers (and it's painfully obvious that it is).
I read through the 700+ comments and paraphrased, merged and categorised all the tips.

The 131 tips are split into the following categories:

General

🌟 My Favourite: Enjoy the journey more than the destination, don’t be in a hurry to finish something you are doing, but always at least do something small everyday. Life is not a race, rather, it is an accumulation of smaller improvements to oneself. ~ (u/ksettle)
People are in such a rush these days… You can’t expect to become a superhuman overnight. Focus on sustainability first and enjoy the journey.

Cleaning

🌟 My Favourite: Listen to podcasts/audiobooks when doing chores. My excitement to listen to a new episode of my favorite podcast motivates me to do boring stuff like dishes or laundry. (I personally listen to podcasts) ~ (u/dani-tp)
Cleaning became so easy once I started using a “side” to stimulate my brain. I’m mostly watching TV shows when I clean right now (this also works for cooking!) .

Memory

🌟 My Favourite: Use Spaced Repetition to study for your exams, remember things about people in your life, and literally everything you can possibly make a flashcard for. ~ (u/beatadhd)
Is it narcisstic to put my own tip as a favourite? Well who cares, it works! Spaced repetition is fantastic and honestly feels like cheating*. There are a lot of free tools out there which work great. I’m currently using my own private tool* 😉

Time Blindness

🌟 My Favourite: Get an electric toothbrush with a timer. ADHD people have time blindness and it’ll make sure you brush for at least two minutes. ~ (u/insaxon)
Yes. Two minutes can feel like two hours for me. Or I’ll brush for 20 seconds and think five minutes has passed. I can’t trust my brain, so I started using an electric toothbrush with a timer

Distractions

🌟 My Favourite: Use a noise-cancelling headset and listen to music/white noise/brown noise. Enables hyperfocus and blocks out distractions (“I don’t regret getting diagnosed late, but I do regret getting noise cancelling headphones that late in life.”) ~ (u/rn7889)
Stop scrolling right now and go buy the noise-cancelling headset. A noise-cancelling headset + some noise like music/brown noise is essential if you have ADHD. Feel free to thank me later once your life changes.
If the headset isn't in your budget: Brown noise + earphones will get you 80% of the way there.

Getting Things Done

🌟 My Favourite: Body doubling - if you need to do some work that requires focus without much fun, have someone in the room with you. They could be working too, or not. Just having them there makes everything just a little more interesting and a little more accountable. ~ (u/Creebjeez)
I feel like a lot of people are missing some sort of accountability system in their lives. I don’t do body doubling but I use Beeminder to keep me accountable.

Emotional Dysregulation

🌟 My Favourite: You’re allowed to let things go. Forget irrelevant things and forgive yourself. Ignore the awkward thing you did last week. Life will move on. ~ (u/bitetheboxer, u/optimisticaspie)
Stop hating yourself. Don’t look at the future. Don’t look at the past. Look at the present. I used to always hate myself for being so unproductive. I realised how pointless that was and I started to focus on improving myself in the present.

Sleep

🌟 My Favourite: Set two alarms when you get up in the morning. One to get out of bed and one for your medication. e.g: 5:30 AM wake up and take medication and then fall back to bed. By your 6AM alarm you’ll have waken up and your meds will have kicked in ~ (u/BizzarduousTask)
What a great lifehack. I’ve been doing this the past few days (except I don’t wake up at 6AM) - it works pretty well. Also I throw my phone on the other side of the room so it forces me to get out of bed.

Relationships

🌟 My Favourite: For maintaining eye contact: Imagine a red dot on someone’s nose for intense focus. Bridge of the nose for paying attention. ~ (u/asmugone)
Haven’t tried this one but I used to have trouble with eye contact a few years ago so this stood out to me. I’m pretty good with eye contact now, but I’ll be trying it over the next few weeks anyway.

Work

🌟 My Favourite: Learn to say no to taking on things that you know may cause you stress and excess pressure just because it’s money. It is not worth it, just put the boundaries that will save your mental health in the first place and you won’t have to deal with the fallout later. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. ~ (u/Somewhereonabike)
God yes… ADHD people have a dangerous habit of overcommitting to stuff. Personally I think I just forget that I’m already working on X, Y and Z. Sustainability is important - don’t overcommit.

School

🌟 My Favourite: Visit your school's inclusivity and disability team. They will hopefully have policies for helping people with ADHD ~ (u/beatadhd)
This is something I never took advantage of while at University, but I probably should have. A few assignment extensions when my meds stopped working would have saved me from countless all nighters…

Executive Function

🌟 My Favourite: On tough days. Use the 1-thing theory. Just try and accomplish just one-thing for that day. e.g. Clean the kitchen. ~ (u/soggysocks63, u/GoodGuyVik)
A bit less life-hacky compared to the others but I’ve found that getting started is a lot easier when you only have a single priority.

Nutrition/Medication

🌟 My Favourite: Use a 7-day pill organiser with AM/PM slots and put your medication and supplements there. ~ (u/ImprovedMeyerLemon)
I know a lot of people have issues with remembering if they took their medication. This is an easy, simple and cheap fix.

2020.09.05 18:38 The_Human_Empire The Eldest of Gods Chapter 3: The Chapter Where I Stopped Plagiarising HG Wells

Prologue First [Next]
Chapter 3: The Chapter Where I Stopped Plagiarising HG Wells
It had been a solid minute of horrified staring since the very second that Paul had stepped out of his stolen extragalactic craft. And by Shub-Niggurath's precum, he had regretted it ever since.
I mean seriously though, they could have at least attempted communication! But no, they had to just fucking stare at him as if he’s an eldritch entity that guilds everyone to their deat- oh, right. . .
Well they couldn’t have known that anyway! Hell, they couldn’t even do the obvious thing and just run. I mean, it’s not like he’s still an omnipotent being anymore!
But alas, there he was, standing in front of a cauldron of sapient bats that sounds very Romanian for some reason. And by very, I mean “if a drunk Italian tried to do a vampire accent while chugging semen” kind of very. Luckily though, this agonizing retardation had finally come to pass as a fleet of warships hath suddenly entered the atmosphere.
And though such an unexpected event, those peacocks, his location, and the events that will occur in next couple of minutes had dawned on him, and the bat people too to some extent. He used to be omniscient after all.
“Oh, so that’s where I am. . .” Paul said as a Gothic looking Japanese castle that looks to be straight out 40k if the Imperium was Asian hath parted the clouds as it falls slowly upon the chiropteran earth, all while he just stares at it like a fucking idiot before saying; “. . . oh. . . SHHHIT!” prior to him running back into his shitty ship to attempt an escape. That is, if he can figure out how to fucking fly it.
And what of the bat people, you may ask? Well they’ve fucked off when they saw the fleet, just like our dear friend Paul, over there.
What, you think they’re completely retarded? • Marlius was quite thankful that the town he lives in was just half an hour away from the Vidus Family Farmstead, the place where the quite repulsively described extra-terrestrial had crash onto.
Admittedly, he had yet to fully digest the confirmation that alien life was in fact, a reality. It was quite strange really. “All this time, my people have pondered if they were truly alone in the universe, and now we finally have the answer! And it came from outside the solar system, no less. That means there’s more planets out there! Possibly even orbiting their own little suns!” I thought to himself with absolute glee as drove across the open
Oh how right he was on that, if I, The Lord of Narration, do say so myself. . .
“Ah, what a time to be alive, indeed.” he said to himself with a cheeky bat grin. Perhaps he should listen more to what his daughter says. Since she was, admittedly, quite scared. And perhaps he should too. . . Though then again, the only thing that was confirmed was extra-terrestrial existence, not extra-terrestrial intent.
“Hopefully we stay alive around these times. . .” He said with a nervous smile accompanying him as the weight of this momentous occasion hath dawned upon.
And just as he was appreciating the concerning light of this new dawn, something flew right next to his car. Something so disturbing that will scar him for life. Though not much as what is to come. . .
And that something is indeed deserving of the title of disturbing, for it looked to be a levitating machine of various wires and engines that bared only the skull of a beaked being and the skinless wings of a creature of utterly alien proportions.
Such a sight had, understandably, froze Marlius from utter fear and shock. Though not too much as for him to loose control of his automobile. And through his unfortunate desire to not crash and fucking die immediately, he hath garnered the attention of this eerily skeletal monstrosity, allowing him to notice that the thing’s right eye socket has the glowing red lens of a impossibly advanced plate camera attached to it.
“Camera lenses. . .” All he could hear was the eerie gust of open road air, the rumbling of his vehicle's rusting engines and wheels, and the skeletal noises that that mechanism produces as it flaps it’s fleshless wings when he said that to himself in terror, as the idea that the thing fast enough to catch up to his vehicle while stile maintaining eye-to-socket contact has the possibility of being some sort of horrible scouting tool had entered his feeble brain. Though before the realization that this thing was in fact the thing that his daughter was talking about earlier could dawn on him, the mechanical horror of bones, wires, and steel had thankfully flown away.
And by “thankfully,” I meant fuck you, as it the flying construct of scouting hath flown up and towards the farmstead where the confirmation of alien existence was announced, revealing to Marlius' night vision meant eyes an enormous Western looking castle made of metals, dangling wires, and sharp spikes underneath, and is being accompanied by a fleet of floating warships made rusting steel. It was, a sight that Marlius will never forget as the ships roared their cannons of war a dozen times and a dozen more, causing entire continents of o crumble and melt as to make way for the foundation of a castle from a dying star.

“Fucking work!” Paul yelled as he aggressively bashed the bottom of his fists upon every control panel that he could find within this hijacked ship of his out of fucking frustration and retardation.
“They had to be the fucking peacocks.” He said with chuckle of defeat. Though of course, the invading fleet was not necessarily actual peacocks, nor even of peacock descent. Nope, he was just racist.
Nevertheless, there he stood optionless as an army of Mankind's former champions comes closer to claiming this droplet of a world into their ever-expanding and ever-shrinking ocean of a hundred billion galaxies.
“Heh. . .” Chuckled The Lord of the Dead as he recalled what hath occurred to allow such a pathetic race to claim our people as something they could conquer and take revenge upon like some goddamn ants staring onto a Human in Arthur-Fisting anger as he casted their colony with molten aluminium out of sheer apathy and boredom, so that I may gift onto you this bullshit expositionary worldbuilding and that dated ass meme from 12,016 HE.
After all, they were the evolved descendants of the Green Pheasants, Phasianus Versicolor. Or as they put it in their native tongue, the Fashianusu (kinda weeb ass name, I know), also known as Humanity’s Chosen Successor, The Empire of the Dying Sun, The Rightful Heir to Mankind, They Who Shall Join Us at the Halls of Omniterra, and of course, the WWII Japanese bird rip-offs of the Imperium of Man.
All those stupid titles, hehe. As if they expected us to steep so low as to step down from our eldritch thrones like some employee for a low paying job. I mean come on! We’re not that desperate.
Anyways, where was I? Oh yeah, Paul gave up and accepted his own decree as he dropped his ass onto the captain’s seat, allowing the fucking ship to finally fly right before the his vicinity got completely annihilated by the ten foot tall Japanese space birds...
Sigh, Who the fuck wrote this garbage again?

Ioanniela didn’t know when or how her lifelong home's walls and ceiling had collapsed onto herself and her family. All she knows is that her eyes are now covered in blood, her brother's lifeless head is poking out of the rubble, and that her mother is aiming her father’s rifle onto a ten foot tall beaked creature who’s armoured in dark rusting metal as it stood ominously on the front entrance.
Needless to say, she didn’t like the fact that she was cursed enough to be able to see all of these traumatizing things through her own blood blinding her eyes. She couldn’t even cry out of shock and horror. That or she didn’t have even time to do so since her mother uselessly shot the bulletproof monster before being brutally cut in half with it’s feathery molten wings.
Sigh, great job there Éabha. Is this seriously what you do as the Goddess of All Life?
“Shut your damn mouth, Malcolm.” She said to me sternly from outside the door of my empty featureless room here at Omniterra whilst I read this fucking HFY series alone to myself. Why did I pick narration again?

2020.08.17 19:29 bestupdator "My (22M) vegan girlfriend (21F) wants me to get rid of my cat"

repost, original post by u/throwRA78wdhsg

I can't believe I'm about to type this but here we go.
I've been dating my GF for 7 months. She's amazing and we're super compatible in a lot of ways. She is an outspoken vegan, and she made it clear at the start of our relationship that it was important to her that any potential had similar cruelty-free values. Me, already being a pescatarian, had little difficulty transitioning to a fully plant based diet. My GF was proud of me for going cruelty free and everything seemed well. We became "the vegan couple" on our college campus.
Then there is my cat, Mittens... I've had her for three years and I adore her. She's such a sweet and cuddly cat. However, my GF was always a little apprehensive around her, and she blamed it on not growing up around cats. After a while we sort of made a tacit agreement to mostly hang out at her apartment instead of mine, so Mittens never really came up again in conversation.
Fast forward through all the quarantine stuff... My gf and I have spent a lot of time together during this pandemic and we've started talking about taking our relationship to the next level. We began seriously looking at either buying a new apartment together or having one of us move in with the other.
However, after a lot of talking and planning, my GF sat me down and dropped a bomb shell on me. She said that with this next phase of the relationship, she did not see a future with me unless I was willing to give away Mittens. She said that she believed owning a cat is unconscionable for vegans, because they hunt mice and eat meat, and because the very act of owning a pet is a violation of vegan principles.
I was stunned. I told her that I was absolutely not willing to give up Mittens, and she had no choice but to eat meat so I was reducing harm as much as possible by buying reputable brands of cat food. Plenty of vegans own cats and think along those same lines. My gf got mad and said "how much flesh does your cat eat? How many animals died to make all that food? Would you be okay with that being human flesh?"
I got mad and told my GF that I would have really appreciated her telling me about her cat opinions before we got serious. She went on and on about cats killing animals. I ended the conversation there. I was so angry that I left my gfs apartment. And I snuggled with Mittens when I got home! Although the mood soured a bit when my GF sent me a link to a Reddit thread advocating for the extinction of domestic cats. Sigh
I think it goes without saying that I am not going to get rid of my cat. However, it pains me to think that an otherwise wonderful relationship could be ending because of a difference in ideology. I don't even really understand where my GF is coming from because like I said, a lot of vegans own cats. Now granted, cat ownership can be a controversial topic in vegan circles and I probably would not have gotten a cat if I had been vegan at the time, but I have Mittens now, and she deserves to eat. (Yes, I've researched vegan cat food, but Mittens has some digestive issues and my vet strongly cautions against it.)
I've talked to some of my vegan and vegetarian friends and they all think my gf has lost her mind. Some have suggested that it's not about Mittens and my gf just wants an excuse to end it. They probably don't understand why I haven't broken up yet, but I care about my GF so much. I'd hate for this bizarre curve ball to be the end of a beautiful thing. I want to try and work something out.
Where do I even go from here? I will not compromise on Mittens and I don't think my GF will compromise either.
Edit: wow, this completely blew up while I was asleep. I am trying to read every comment but there are a lot. Also, please allow me to take this moment to reiterate that my GFs views are not representative of those held by the wider vegan community!!

UPDATE
TL;DR My gf is a passionate vegan and wants me to get rid of my beloved cat because cats eat meat and kill mice.
First of all, let me say thank you for everyone who offered advice. There are over 7,000 comments on my original post and I have dozens of PMs. Frankly I'm still pretty overwhelmed with the magnitude of the response. I did my best to read most everyone's comments but obviously I couldn't get to everything!
I would also like to preempt this post by saying, as many users pointed out, that my GFs extreme views on domestic cats are not representative of the vegan/vegetarian community as a whole. I do think that, sometimes, new vegans can be a little overzealous. In reality, most of us are just doing the best that we can to not hurt animals! I did not expect to generate a big debate in the comments.
So, we broke up, obviously. I would never, ever give up my cat Mittens. Many users said that this situation was about control, not veganism, and looking back, I do see a pattern of control on my GFs part. I was blind to it I guess.
I called my GF and said I was not willing to give up Mittens under any circumstances, and given the recent issues we'd had, and our incompatible views, I thought it was best that we parted ways. I said she deserved a partner that shared her values. She then asked if we were breaking up, I said yes. There was some anger on her end but otherwise the situation actually went better than I expected.
So, yeah. That's really it.
Oh, and several users did ask to see a picture of Mittens. I have uploaded one to imgur:
https://imgur.com/a/WxOk6qG Thanks again to everyone who offered advice. It really helped.

2020.08.09 21:46 drybedsheet Teenager Living in Saigon - Already super informative so see if you can AMA!

Just a short intro :)

I don't know why I suddenly had the urge to Google what people think of Saigon and read random concerned tourists/travelers' posts at 10:30PM, but here I am. I noticed that a lot of you had the same questions, worry about the same things, wonder about the same places,... and thought it would be convenient to make a big post addressing some of those topics.
I won't talk about places like the Notre Dame Cathedral, or the Ben Thanh Market because you probably dug deep into it already and it's also everywhere on expats' websites, recommended to you.

A little bit about me!

I've lived here my entire life and can speak fluent Vietnamese. I will be in my senior year of high school soon at an international school. I've probably been everywhere in this city since I hang out every weekend. Since I am a teenager, I frequent all these places and do all these things very often, literally every week/weekend. So trust that this will be a very honest review as I will also be sharing some of my experiences. Enjoy! :D

"Is Saigon safe?"

This question is so broad that my answer will be - YES. But it really depends on you, I'm assuming you have basic common sense\*.
Robbery & Assault
Petty crimes & Pickpocketing
Traffic & Crossing Streets
Scams
Taxi Drivers

Transportation & Getting Around!

bruh i'm telling you, screw taxi drivers & bikers lol you don't need them at all.

A Few Restaurants

Coming from a foodie, there are actually so many places I love but will just list some. You can search up these places on Google Images too:

Vietnamese Food

To be completely honest, any crowded open-space place with a lot of locals will probably serve good Vietnamese food. Don't go to fancy-looking restaurants looking for these, they'll be like 10x more expensive and probably suck/will give you a misleading idea of what Vietnamese food tastes like. You can find these types of Vietnamese food at any corner, and they almost always serve everything else on this list too. The one with a bunch of locals is where it's at :)

Nightlife & Partying

I will not be sharing my personal experiences here because I think it's illegal LOL but I will briefly talk about the place :D

Shopping & Malls

These are the malls I recommend and frequent.

Moving Here?

Best, safest, most convenient and fun place to live in - District 7, Phu My Hung!

Moving Here AND Curious About Apartments?

These are all in District 7, so you already know you gon' be safe :)

Moving Here AND Curious About Schools?

*What I Mean by Basic Common Sense.

I really don't need to tell you any of this, as this is something you should always be doing, anywhere, anyways. However, after reading a bunch of posts, some of you really need this...

Final Notes

Woah... did not realize how long this is... I might add some updates/edits in the future if I see fit. I hope you learned a little bit more about Saigon after reading through this and find the time to come and visit once this whole corona shit blows over :) Thanks for reading!

2020.08.04 20:17 Jac0b777 An In-Depth Examination of the Importance of Free Speech, Its Parallels With Meditation and the Futility of Censorship

"Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience, above all liberties."
– John Milton, Areopagitica
Free speech, or the ability to freely speak your mind (especially in a public venue), has had a tumultuous ride throughout humanity’s history. Though there have been strong movements for the freedom of expression dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, in reality it was still very easy to get executed when speaking truth to power, or when going against the cultural or religious grain at the time (Socrates’ death sentence for “subversion of the youth” and impiety [in his case disbelief in the Gods of the state] being one well known example).
From being burned at the stake, excommunicated, imprisoned, fined or even sent to a labor camp, many of the people that comprised our societies throughout history have not been too keen on hearing what other people thought or believed. Though freedom of speech was often idealized in principle, that principle could be (and often was) very quickly swept aside when it contradicted what was commonly seen as correct, true or morally right in terms of the values, beliefs, scientific paradigms and religious perceptions of the time.
With the advent of the printing press, the ability to speak your mind freely skyrocketed, but so too did censorship, imposed primarily by the Church due to fears of heresy. In fact, the origins of most copyright law originate in the Catholic Church and a variety of governments’ attempt to control the flow of information through printing.
The ability to share and disseminate “illegal” information was now easier than before, but the penalties were still great and anonymity in sharing difficult. However, throughout the 20th century the extent and importance of free speech increased greatly – and ultimately came to a head with the advent and incredible spread of the Internet.
Now the information era had come – and with it the seeming impossibility to stop a torrent of information, views and perspectives being shared everywhere. Ideas that would have surely had you killed hundreds of years ago were now commonplace and easily accessible to all. Or so it seemed.
The Internet truly looked like one of those few rare inventions that could positively influence the world – giving free access to information for all, as well as uniting people from distant lands in the knowledge that they are not really as different as they may have previously thought. But as in many such cases, the human desire to control started rearing its ugly head.
Though the amount of misinformation can be rampant online, as well as the hate and fear that can circulate and find common-ground with others, creating echo-chambers of destructive thought, one wonders whether the true danger lies in allowing such information to spread unmitigated or whether the far greater threat comes from a reckless (and usually unsuccessful) desire to stomp it out of existence.

Censorship or Communication – Who or What Shall Be the Arbiter of Truth?

“All censorships exist to prevent anyone from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently, the first condition of progress is the removal of censorship.”
― George Bernard Shaw, Mrs. Warren's Profession
There has been much debate about the harmful nature of spreading misinformation, as well as promoting fear and hate based ideologies, due to their potential corrupting influences on human minds and in turn, whole societies. This goes as far back to the ideas of Socrates, where in his ideal Republic certain ideas, imagery, poems and literature would be banned from the public arena, censored out of existence (described primarily in books 2 & 3), in order to promote a society that would strive towards what is “right”.
Of course the first great problem here is the question of what indeed is right, correct and positive for the flourishing of a healthy society. Who decides on what should be censored and indeed based on what do they decide?
What is seen as morally correct has changed greatly throughout history and still differs from culture to culture – where, for example, homosexuality has been and still is believed to be a great sin in many areas of the planet (and has throughout many eras of human history), nowadays it is viewed in a far more accepting manner, especially in Western society. A great divergence from certain ancient cultures to modern times can be seen in something such as pederasty, which was seen as normal, and even encouraged, in certain eras of ancient Greece and Rome. Now similar practices are viewed as mostly sick and illegal due to minors being seen as unable to meaningfully consent to sexual activity with adults.
Mainstream scientific views have also been wrong many times throughout our times and have only gradually updated themselves through new discoveries that slowly seeped into the academic and public arena. Thus nowadays, despite the discoveries in quantum mechanics that describe the world as a relation between the observer and the observed, as well as imply a non-deterministic reality, the old Newtonian world-view of pure objectivity and determinism is still very much rooted in most of society’s thinking. There are many more such examples that can be given throughout history. Let me simply mention that until 1803, when their reality was finally conceded, meteorites were seen as a myth and superstition. “Stones cannot fall from the sky” – so all reports of such phenomena were viewed as delusions. In 1772 the prestigious French Academy of Science appointed a committee to investigate such claims of “falling rocks” and concluded that they could not be real. Its conclusions were so convincing that museums all over Western Europe threw away their meteorite specimens.
If morality, beliefs and science are insufficient in creating a template for what should be discussed and what should be censored away, then what should that template even be? Perhaps, just perhaps the censorship of any ideas may not be the best solution after all? Perhaps all ideas should remain on the table, free to be debated at will, while more and better information should be given instead of that which is blatantly false and divisive to be forcibly removed from the public's awareness.

Can One Stomp Out Dissent?

“To forbid us anything is to make us have a mind for it.”
― Michel de Montaigne, Montaigne: Essays
Conversely, does censorship even work in actually uprooting the ideas and beliefs of individuals and groups – or does it merely drive these ideas underground, into greater echo-chambers where further radicalization can occur?
An idea or belief can only survive as long as it is seen as logically correct, or if the emotions behind it are so strong as to keep it afloat (usually it is a bit of both, though feelings do seem to come over facts in modern discourse – sadly we are all to blame in this to some degree, even though many may claim otherwise, not realizing their own blind-spots).
Thus the only way to neutralize it is to dissolve the emotion behind it and/or refute its logical counter-part. Censorship, of course, does neither of the above. In fact, if an idea is censored and not refuted (especially when many have already taken it into their consciousness) and the emotional wounds behind it are not healed (if it is based on fear or anger), it is extremely likely to continue spreading in some way. Not only that, the desire for its believers to spread it will become far greater, and in their minds more justified, due to its censorship.
The mere move towards censoring an idea is something that can often make it more popular, in what can be described as the phenomenon of psychological reactance. For example ― in 2003, Barbra Streisand sued photographer Kenneth Adelman for taking a photograph of her Malibu mansion, citing violation of privacy as a reason. The photograph of her estate, which had been downloaded a mere few times from Adelman’s website before that, became so popular as the result of the well-publicized lawsuit that it was downloaded near half-a-million times in the following month. The social phenomenon of information spreading even more widely after its attempted censorship has thus been dubbed The Streisand Effect.
But of course, this phenomenon is nothing new and can be seen throughout history.
Did the vast persecution of Christians since Roman times and a desire to stop their religious expression stop Christianity as a whole? Did the censorship of literature related to male homosexuality and birth control in the 19th century (especially in Britain) cause “gayness” to die off, or the movement for its inclusion in society to cease? Did the censoring of such works as Ulysses, by James Joyce, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, by DH Lawrence, and Howl, by Allen Ginsberg, remove these books out of existence or did they perchance become bestsellers?
Censorship, in terms of its desire to control is similar to war – it comes with a desire to stomp out the opposition in the hopes that it can and will allow itself to be eliminated by force. But if the war on terror and the one on drugs have given such poor results, how on Earth can a war on specific forms of information ever hope to be a success (putting aside the question whether success in such a “war” should even be hoped for)? Information is much like water, or air, but even subtler than that. It is carried through our consciousness, our minds, and without controlling the inner world and will of all, the flow of ideas can never be truly ceased.
Perhaps the greatest thing that can be done, especially in the case of fear and hate based ideologies, is the promotion of emotional healing and alternative arguments that may give people a different perspective and allow them to step into “a new story”, as one of my favourite social philosophers, Charles Eisenstein, would say.

The Parallels Between Meditation and Free Speech

“As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul…”
― Hermes Trismegistus
As someone that has practiced meditation for many years now, I cannot help but see some very significant parallels between the suppression of thoughts, ideas (including corresponding emotions) on the level of the individual – and the suppression of those very same aspects on the societal and global scale.
In my experience, whenever something is suppressed in the human mind, pushed into the subconscious, it desires to rise up again into consciousness, where it will be acknowledged and integrated back into the psyche. Through meditative practice, emotions and thoughts are allowed to arise, be felt, observed and thus integrated. It is awareness that is the great healer, the great catalyst for change – and by relegating pain back to the unconscious, by suppressing it, as well as our desires and needs, our joys and fears, trials and tribulations, we will ensure that mental health, inner peace and happiness will always be out of reach.
Throughout my life I have noticed that what applies to the individual very often also applies to the collective. For what else is the collective than a group of individuals, a collective consciousness, a hive-mind that in many ways can be said to be an organism in and of itself?
If collectively, the thoughts, emotions and perspectives of individuals are suppressed and denied, if their ideas are censored out of existence, if they are not allowed to speak freely, the consequences to the health of the society that these individuals comprise will become nothing short of disastrous.
If they are on the other hand allowed to come into the light of awareness of the collective organism of humanity, healing and integration can begin, most often through healthy discourse and debate. Even the most wretched and hateful belief-systems, even the ideas that seem to fly in the face of all logic and reason (though many times, when facing some of these ideas, we see that perhaps our own logic and reason needs an update as well) can and must be brought to the attention of mass consciousness, in order for integration and healing (in the case of great fear and hate) to occur.
It is futile to believe that ideologies based on a lack of sensibility and empathy will simply disappear if we ignore them. This is mirrored in the belief that many people still have, where their own inner shadow or the aspects of themselves they have deemed unfitting or unworthy will simply vanish into thin air if they are never acknowledged. This will simply not occur, for it is impossible for healing to happen without awareness, it is impossible for change to happen without the light of consciousness, it is impossible for understanding to come without acknowledgment.
Through repression and suppression of people’s thoughts, opinions and emotions those very aspects begin to come up in other areas of individual and collective life – for what is suppressed will eventually come up into consciousness, whether through a verbalized opinion (perhaps the least problematic of all), an action, or ultimately on the most extreme collective scale – through war.
Thus the only way forward is to turn on the light and let the darkness be dissolved in its presence. As within, so without, as above so below – and if I might add, as in the individual, so in the collective.

The Discourse Deciders of the Information Age

“Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech.”
― Benjamin Franklin
It is now that the entirety of online discourse has been guided towards and centralized in a few mega-platforms, owned by enormous corporations and spear-headed by out of touch and often morally destitute billionaires. Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit (some of these owned by the same company) are now the norm for searching, communicating, sharing, discussing and seeking out entertainment on the Web. On a myriad of devices, these websites are the default choice for many activities, often so integrated that they cannot even be removed (for example - on many new smartphones, various Google apps, as well as Facebook cannot be uninstalled), thus guiding especially new, and technically less savvy, users to being more inclined to use them.
Because everyone now uses these platforms, it is more likely that companies, political parties, or even individuals trying to speak their mind, will use them as well. Whether because of a desire to spread influence, sell a product or merely speak their mind, being on these platforms means more people will hear your voice and thus your reach will be far greater than elsewhere. Not to mention that most of these sites, through the immense profits they have accrued (mainly of course through the participation of the masses), have the ability to manage vast amounts of data and users, through expensive physical infrastructure and top software engineers, thus making their monopoly in the online world even fiercer. The idea that one can simply “create their own YouTube” is obviously an illusion, since the upkeep costs would be far beyond most people’s (or even companies’) reach.
These vast corporations and their respective platform hold an immense monopoly on Internet discourse – and through the power they hold, they have a massive say in what ideas, beliefs and perspectives, as well as which individuals discussing them are allowed in online discourse. And since online discourse now comprises the main aspect of mass human discussion and debate in general, these platforms have the power to shape and mold the minds of people, rivaled in their power perhaps only by television at the height of its influence.

Solutions to Combat Silencing

“Proclaim the truth and do not be silent through fear.”
― St. Catherine of Siena
So what should be done? I suggest the greatest antidote to censorship is speaking one’s mind fully and without fear. Only by being afraid of speaking up, only through fear of being “canceled” or viciously verbally assaulted (real possibilities, but still far lesser repercussions than those people faced in the past), can ideas and perspectives be silenced and allowed to fester in the individual and global subconscious.
If possible, try to be a good example when you do speak your mind. Educate yourself on the topics you are discussing, listen to other people and consider their opinions and perspectives, allow yourself to be aware of your emotional triggers, wounds and how they influence your thinking and reasoning.
If at all possible, consider engaging in a meditation practice – that alone will give you far greater clarity of mind, the ability to transcend emotional wounds that prevent insightful and unimpeded reasoning (including listening to others with an open-mind), as well as that crucial element that we should all be striving for in order to make our society better – compassion. In a way, clear and open communication naturally gives rise to compassion (and ultimately is a form of compassion), as you allow yourself to truly hear and know the other person’s perspective, thereby updating and clarifying your own.
It is clear, open communication and debate that we should all be striving for in order to make this society better, in order to dispel misinformation and hate, as well as to foster empathy for one another and our distinct perspectives that make life the cornucopia of diversity and uniqueness that it is.

2020.08.04 19:49 Jac0b777 An Examination of the Importance of Free Speech, Its Parallels With Meditation and the Futility of Censorship

2020.08.02 07:46 kentexcitebot Chrome OS Beta channel got promoted to Chrome OS 85. Here is what changed!

_All right crew!

The Chrome OS Beta Channel got promoted to milestone 85 a little over a week ago - from 84.0.4147.94 to 85.0.4183.39. As with every new milestone update, this brings massive new changes to the table, offering several new features, bug fixes, and security enhancements to better improve your Chrome OS user experience. Due to the sheer size, I may be missing a few things here and there. Here is what changed!

Like my content and want to buy me a coffee? You can support me on ko-fi using this link or by using the link in my Reddit profile. If you want to be kept up to date with everything new to Chrome OS, feel free to give me a follow. Thanks in advance for your support!! :)

Featured changes

This section showcases changes I believe to be the most significant to this build of Chrome OS. They make a massive impact to the user experience and may be something to look forward to when upgrading your system to this build. These changes will also be listed in the "Notable changes" section of the post.

  1. New accessibility feature to change cursor colors in Chrome OS. This feature has 5 colors for now: Red, Orange, Green, Blue, and Purple. Custom cursor colors are important for visibility to some users with vision impairment (e.g. color blindness). To change the cursor colors, you’ll need to enable chrome://flags/#enable-experimental-accessibility-cursor-colors. See my reddit post to see what it looks like!
  2. The print management feature flag is enabled by default, which allows users to manage and view their print history on Chrome OS. The print managing app will display ongoing print jobs and will dynamically update depending on the status of the job. When a print job notification shows up in Chrome OS, tapping on the notification will open the print jobs management app. Click here to see what it looks like!
  3. The Crostini USB allow unsupported feature flag is enabled by default, which allows developers to mount their USB serial devices to their Chromebook without having to change a flag in their Linux container. Your mileage may vary as some serial devices will not work (FTDI, CH341, etc).
  4. The Port forwarding feature flag is enabled by default, which allows users to set up multiple network ports to their Linux containers. This feature should be incredibly useful for developers who want to access network traffic through a port number of their choice and make it accessible for others on the local network or the internet.
  5. The Chrome OS Shelf will now shrink down application icons when there is no more room left on the shelf while in tablet mode. Personally, I wish this app icon resizing also occurs in clamshell mode, but this is a good step in the right direction. For those out of the loop, this used to be a hidden feature flag. Click here to see what this does.
  6. New experimental feature flag that limits items on the shelf to the ones associated with windows on the active desk. Boost your virtual desk productivity now by enabling chrome://flags/#ash-limit-shelf-items-to-active-desk. See my reddit post about it here!
  7. The brand new Chrome OS settings search feature is enabled by default. Unlike the old search that used exact string matching, this search uses fuzzy search algorithms to suggest sections of Chrome OS settings that are likely to be relevant to the search. See screen recording.
  8. You will now be able to “Go to file location” when a single file is selected in Recents, Audio, Images, or Videos. This is a small change with a HUGE productivity benefit. See my reddit post about it here!

Notable changes in this build

The following is everything I found with this version of Chrome OS. There may be more things I might've missed - please let me know in the comments if you find a significant change not listed here. Bullet points in bold are changes I believe are the most significant.

2020.07.30 13:05 thetryhard06 A female (supposedly 20F) scammer trying to use me (21M), under guise of a romantic relationship, for help with family "inheritance" through the use of CashApp ---- BUSTED

Guys, I want y'all to know something that just happened to me. I want y'all to know so y'all don't fall for the same rope. Honestly, it really made me turn off about women and online dating.
So, I met this scammer, a girl, on this new app called PearUp. (I thought it's great) We both matched and she was beyond attractive, she was gorgeous. The conversation was initated and she carried the conversation, but in a weird way, like "How is this site treating you?" and randomly changing to questions. At first, I thought that this could be a normal impulse, but to lessen the weirdness, I asked her to shift to text. She responded in a weird way to that but gave the phone number. Her phone number was a non-iPhone message, so I was like, okay she has an Android. Her questions and the conversations kept feeling weird. She asked me if she could trust me, on the first night of our conversations. We would mainly text at nights and I'll tell you why. My doubts kept getting higher, so I decided to investigate with the pictures she sent and the number I have. The pictures that I reversed search were negative, but her phone number was actually a TextNow VOIP number. I knew this was absolutely a scam, but I wanted to see exactly where this is going and what is this scammer's (her) endgame. I confronted her, and she made some statements such as she has an old iPhone 4s, she used to have Android, she has no WiFi connection, she relies on her friend's hotspot, and such. To test her, I asked for pictures but the pictures seemed so model-like like her online profile, so I asked for a video to hear her voice. She said she couldn't because of her WiFi. I asked for her Instagram. She said her Instagram is inactive as it was hacked. I asked for her Snapchat and she said she doesn't use it. (OMG can you believe a girl not using Snapchat?) I decided to ultimately test her by going sexual on her with sexual innuendo (failed, but did the trick) asking for nudes. The first nudes she sent were fake, and brought up trust again. So, I decided to catch her on every lie. She promised to send me a real one the next day with her friend's iPhone since her phone is trash. She actually passed that by sending a nude the next night. The thing is that she would text at night, and she enjoyed the sexual conversations. The stories I came up and she was taking it in with responses on how she feels. The night before tonight, she said her parents died at 15 and she was not happy. She also tried to minimally asked if I could pay for her WiFi bill so I can see her through FaceTime and get videos from her. I said I couldn't. Tonight, we did the sexual conversations again but she brought me to the fold. She wanted me to get a CashApp. So I lied and told her I got the CashApp. I pressed her on why I needed a CashApp. She said she wanted to get her parents' inheritance but needed my help to get it. I was like, oh hell no, because inheritances is a legal topic, that especially involves a lawyer and financial banker, and I cannot help "her" with that at all. That is purely a scam with CashApp involved. I kept saying I can't do it and made it a final answer, along with a end to the conversation. "She" ended it.
I want y'all to be careful because these small things in online dating can lead to big things in your life if you go blind. I know some, especially me, are just caught in the wind and blind that we want a relationship with a very attractive person of the opposite sex. I've realized that I don't really need a relationship now, even though I see it on the social media and in person. However, I've also realized that I'm so smart and self-aware that I knew that scammers have different ways to do it. If you notice something off or have even a doubt about the conversation, just end it. If you're smart and know how to come off stronger than the scammer, you can see where the endgame lies, but don't put yourself in a situation that you completely infatuated. Remember, a scam like that, normally counts as "aiding and abetting" a crime. In honesty, there was a very little part of me, that 1%, that was kind of hoping that it wasn't a scam, but every time, I knew it was a scam with more doubts than ever. No matter how much the scammer tried to adjust themselves to the conversation. Overall, it ruined my idea of online dating and I'd rather go out dating in person than ever do online dating. And damn, it did hurt a little after seeing it, but hey, I wasn't fully committing and it wasn't something too happy to go forward in anyway. Lastly, just remember, the real fun to date is in person, not on text, and you'll find the one.
